Ok now that the money rant is out of the way... it has just been on my mind for a while I had to get it out.
Today I hoped I inspired 3 young women to join the industry. They seem to enjoy themselves today. Ok so I work not ONE but TWO stations at the restaurant. I prep, I cook, and do the service for both pantry and pastry stations. So on top of my usual work... which this week has been unusally busy for me, I had 3 teens full of questions and excitement following me all day long. I showed them around the kitchen. I had them help me prep stuff out today. I told them about school. I told them what it was like working in a restaurant. Good experience, bad pay. They really enjoyed making crab cakes, watching the chefs fab out fish, and doing the mise for cookie dough.
They had lunch there. Thanked me for showing them a great time. Then I thought to myself... I remember enjoyed making something. Watching someone fab out protein. Being exposed to new ingredients... and I felt that way when I was exposed to a new one, fern frond. Then I realized, I still am those girls. I love learning about the culinary arts and my I thrive for more knowledge. It makes me feel good because it is the one thing that always sticks in my mind the most. I think about food 24/7. What am I going to eat? What would go great with that? I avoid going to borders just because I know I can't leave there without a culinary book.
Ok... shift
What would go great with asparagus soup? I say cripsy prosciutto with a lemon infused oil! Yum!
I need inspiration for dessert! My latest victim in my borders bargain area... The Essential Dessert Cookbook. It was like 5 bucks! Man I love that place! Great bargain. It talks about the ingredients used, methods, receipes and tools used. I do love those books that bring it back to the foundatioin of things. It allows you to put something else of your own to it.
I must confess I do not get the chance to read EVERY book I buy, which is one of the reasons why I have cut back. But I do browse through it. Whenever I need inspiration or just have the need to read food stuff I look back to what I have and for some strange reason I remember it. Alright, time for bed. Work in the morning! I have to make a plethora of asparagus soup, as my exec chef put it, for a party on Saturday and 100 cookies!
Yummy! Des, you should take pictures of your food! And make video tutorials LOL.
ReplyDeleteI remember when you and Erika went to cook food at your school. I feel like that was just yesterday!
